Saraswati
Legend has it that Saraswati was so beautiful that her husband Brahma had four heads so that he could see her from any direction. And this is what we would all like to have when contemplating Lladró’s recreation in porcelain of the Hindu goddess of learning, knowledge, and wisdom, represented by her symbols and attributes.
Sitting on a large lotus flower Saraswati preaches the message that “knowledge is the road to freedom.” That’s why Hindus believe that girls named after her will be successful at school. In this work, the master artists at the Lladró workshop have managed to convey the deep spirituality of a goddess who is venerated in Indian schools because she represents the “power of words” and the magic concealed in language. Saraswati is a limited edition of 720 units.
If there is one thing in this sculpture that catches our attention above others, it is the lavish decoration, embracing everything from the sumptuous crown to the fabric of her clothing, her headdress and jewels, as well as the feathers of the peacock, hand-painted one by one, or the flowers in the garland and on the peacock’s crest, handmade petal by petal.
Handcrafted process
Another focus of attention is the bright coloring. In fact, some of the tones were created expressly for this piece, like the pistachio in the garland, the turquoise in the peacock, and the orange and green in the sari. In addition, there is a combination of highly varied and complex decorative techniques, such as the profusion of golden luster, which we can see in both gloss and matte finishes.
